Some from some people in this world, are happy to greet earth day. Earth day is celebrated once every single year. Earth day falls on 22nd April. Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. Earth Day was found by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22nd, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22nd, as International Earth Day.
There are many ways for us to celebrate Earth Day, one of them is, doing 5R. 5R is the way to minimize trash in our environment. That including the 5R is,
- 1. . Reduce, Reduce is an action to decrease or reduce the addition of waste especially plastic waste. This is including Waste minimization. Waste minimization is the process and the policy of reducing amount of waste produced by a person or a society.
- 2. Reuse, is an action to use again or use an object with the maximum uses. To reuse is to use an item more than once. This includes conventional reuse where the item is used again for the same function, and new-life reuse where it is used for a new function. In contrast, recycling is the breaking down of the used item into raw materials which are used to make new items. By taking useful products and exchanging them, without reprocessing, reuse helps to save time, money, energy, and resources. In broader economic terms, reuse offers quality products to people and organizations with limited means, while generating jobs and business activity that contribute to the economy
- 3. Recycling, this is an action to reuse old stuff for new uses. Recycling is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".
- 4. Repair. Maybe some people just know 3R, but at SMPN 1 Balikpapan, there is 5R not 3R. So, the fourth is Repair. Repair is an action to improve it environmentally to be friendly.
- 5. Regeneration. It is a continuous action for the next generation to plant trees as much as possible.
With doing that actions, we can celebrate Earth Day.
Earth day also aims to take care of our Earth. There are many solutions to make our Earth happy again. To make our Earth happy again, we can begin from little actions, They are…
- ü Economizing electricity
- ü Economizing water
- ü Planting more plants
- ü Addition the trash place in our environment
- ü Using one vehicle to go to the place in one direction
- ü Using bike or walking to the place if that impossible
- ü Using paper as efficiently and enough
- ü Replacing tissue paper to handkerchief
- ü Carrying paper bags when shopping, to replace the use of plastic bag
- ü Doing 5R action (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, and Regeneration)
- ü And many more
We focus on environmental issues not only in Earth Day, but also we can focus on environmental every day, every hour, every minute, and every second. And we can do those actions every day, because if we do those actions every day it can accelerate this Earth happy and healthy again. Of course we hope that, Our Earth can be happy and healthy again, So, we can start those actions now. Please, Save our Earth for next generation, Save our Earth from Global Warming, Save our Earth from Greenhouse Gas
